A Hike to Taranaki falls

Have you ever walked behind a waterfall? We hiked to the Taranaki Falls in New Zealand and it was a must-see. The water tumbled down volcanic cliffs into a round shaped pool. And behind it where rocks covered in bright green moss.
We discovered this gem by accident. We planned to stay in the Whakapapa village for one night only and hike the Tongariro Alpine crossing. But the weather decided differently for us. High winds on the track made it impossible for anyone to do the crossing safely and it got postponed.
We were taken by surprise. It was the first activity on the trip that did not go as planned. Luckily the staff of the visitor centre was very helpful and showed us a lot of things to do in the area. Never a dull moment in New Zealand right?
We chose to do a hike close to our camping ground. We were not able to go online and search for a picture of the Taranaki falls before we headed out. It was a lovely sunny day and we were stunned when we reached the falls! This was better than we could have hoped for. If the sun is out and you are brave enough to conquer the cold water the pool is a good spot for a quick swim.
If you continue the hike you get to see the water rushing down the cliffs from above and stand on the edge. On a cloudless day there is a clear view of Mt Ruapehu.
Travel video of this day coming soon!
Pro tip
Always check with the visitor centre if the weather
is safe to do a hike or if there are any broken down
bridges or fluted walkways. They always have insider
tips and know the most enjoyable things to do in
the area.
