Boost your travel with these telephone applications

Updated: Dec 9, 2018

Have a look at these 9 smartphone apps that will come in handy for your next trip! With technology thriving as it is, why not use it in your advantage to boost your journey. Navigation, music, inspiration,... If you can dream it, there is an application for it.

1. Finding the perfect camping spot

Whether you are looking for a free spot to sleep, the best shower or the campsite with the most beautiful view, using an application can help you a lot with locating the right one. During our road trip through New Zealand we used these Apps:

Camper Mate

Shows you nearby locations of everything you need while travelling. You can easily navigate between self-contained or non-self-contained.The app makes it easy to spot great things to do, find public toilets, wifi spots, dump stations, stores and so much more. You can also use this offline.

Rankers NZ

Our favorite for choosing a place to sleep.

Why? Because the first thing you see when selecting a campsite is a score based on the reviews of other travelers. This makes it simple to pick one and get more info with a few clicks. This app can be used without an internet connection.

2. Guiding your way through the country

Getting from point A to B is effortless with these applications for your smartphone. You can use them both without internet if you download the map of your destination. It also saves you a lot of money using your phone instead of hiring a GPS from the car company. We used Maps. me and Google maps offline.

3. Keep track of how much you're spending

Spending money isn't hard and we don't even need an app for this. But keeping track of how much exactly is important. Especially when you are travelling on a budget. We used Monefy for this, because it enables you to track in different currencies and divides your spendings in different categories. A big help for us was downloading the smartphone apps from our own banks (KBC, Fortis, B-Post). This makes it easy to transfer money and check balances quickly.

4. Get inspired

Pinterest is great for finding the inspiration that you need and locating blogpost about your dream destination. It's an easy to use platform with lovely pictures. Their travel section keeps me up at night making lists of where I want to go next..

5. Create the perfect playlist

Download an awesome music playlist. You will spend A LOT of time driving and good music makes it so much more fun and keeps you happy and awake. Spotify helps you create a list with your favourite songs but also allows you to download any list so you can access the songs offline.

6. Watch out for spoilers!

Download a few movies and series on your phone or laptop. Netflix is a good option for this. This comes in a handy when it's a rainy day or if you are feeling sick and have to stay in. A good book will work just fine to.

7. Never miss a sunset/sunrise

A sunrise is worth waking up early for. Mesmerising colours fill the sky and everything is peaceful and quiet. The world is still waking up. But at what time should you be waking up to witness this wonder? We used the Sunrise applications for this. It gives you the exact time of the sunrise and sunset for your destination. (And for golden hour, perfect for taking pictures!)

8. Keep an eye on your schedule

I recently discovered this one and have been using it ever since. I use it both on my laptop and phone and the app synchronises automatically between devices. The application is called Evernote and makes it easy to make notes by using web clippers, checklists, books, ...

I, myself, found this particularly handy for collecting all the fun stuff I found online about a destination and shaping it into a route.

9. Sharing is caring

Sharing photos and videos with family and friends keeps everyone updated. Especially mothers love to see a photo of you pop by to check if you're still looking healthy. We LOVE to use instagram for posting the highlights. But facebook is still my favourite for some quick chats and updates from back home.

Have you checked out our instagram yet?
